While the parents look enthusiastically at the toy, the baby only perceives the \"underside\" of the figures. As the toy also produces a sound, it can of course still have an effect. If you look at other examples from practice, you will discover similar <strong>errors in thinking<\/strong>. In practice, \"great innovation\" is often equated with \"high complexity\". In reality, however, we are increasingly seeing that <strong>simple, reduced solutions<\/strong> are penetrating the market more quickly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e104c50 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e104c50\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">My \"aha moment\" about service design was generated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.service-design-network.org\/community-knowledge\/meet-birgit-mager-president-of-the-service-design-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birgit Mager<\/a> at an innovation event organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/oberoesterreich.iv.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Industriellenvereinigung Ober\u00f6sterreich<\/a> in 2009. We were both invited as speakers and Birgit's contribution was the first time she introduced me to the methodology, which I had previously only known as \"open innovation\": Service Design is about completely aligning the solution with the wishes and needs of the users. In the meantime, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.service-design-network.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Service Design Network<\/a> initiated by Birgit has become the first point of contact for \"design thinkers\" in a globally active network.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\" class=\"translation-block\">The overarching \"<strong>mindset of design thinking<\/strong>\" builds on the mindset, sensitivity and methods of designers to solve problems in an interdisciplinary way. <strong>Service design<\/strong> focuses on the development of services. An optimal design for a service is based on an exact understanding of the customer's needs and wishes and the benefits associated with a solution. For me, this perspective means that <strong>service design<\/strong>, but also <strong>industrial design<\/strong>, address specific focal points within the design thinking framework.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\" class=\"translation-block\">Since many solutions today consist of <strong>hardware (product)<\/strong> and <strong>personal or digital services<\/strong>, this results in a universal framework for designing innovation processes. Essentially, it is about gaining a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of users and developing new solutions on this basis.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\" class=\"translation-block\">The method set is made up of different <strong>design and creative methods<\/strong>. However, the focus is always on customer benefits and not on complex engineering services. Individual methods deal with customer profiles (personas) or the \"customer journey\" through the solution elements.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\" class=\"translation-block\">During a customer journey, designers and developers often try to take on the <strong>position of the end user<\/strong>. For example, you put yourself in the role of a 75-year-old user of an airport's mobility services. If this user also comes from abroad and does not speak German, you will very quickly realize that some touch points are difficult to understand. The foreign user will not understand the instructions. Due to their age, they may also have health restrictions that make barrier-free use more difficult.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\">Another method is designed not to navigate through the process yourself, but to observe other people during the process and question them afterwards. This can also provide a deep insight into the design of the service provision and the service sequence.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\" class=\"translation-block\">For the design of new solutions, an ideal-typical process can be designed from the available methods, which is run through in the form of workshops with several people and specialist disciplines. In the university course \"<a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.at\/en\/universitaetskurs-digital-innovation-modelling\/\" target=\"_self\">Digital Innovation Modelling<\/a>\" (DIM) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-graz.at\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universit\u00e4t Graz<\/a>, we combined methods from design thinking with business model development methods and <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.at\/en\/technology\/\" target=\"_self\">digital tools for crowdsourcing<\/a> and online brainstorming.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ae5f14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"4ae5f14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"544\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/innovation.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Blog1_9_2.webp\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-17140\" alt=\"Blog1_9_2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/innovation.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Blog1_9_2.webp 544w, https:\/\/innovation.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Blog1_9_2-289x300.webp 289w, https:\/\/innovation.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Blog1_9_2-12x12.webp 12w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07a6b56 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"07a6b56\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6>Workshop setup in the university course \"Digital Innovation Modeling\" (DIM)<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42cd159 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42cd159\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This means that at the end of the DIM process, there is not only a design prototype, but also an initial approach for the (digital) business model. The design of customer experiences is also an important differentiating feature in design thinking. The focus on new services, in addition to products, leads to thinking in terms of solutions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-640f180 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"640f180\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Design thinking basically follows an iterative (agile) process that consists of the following steps:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-06b3f94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"06b3f94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li class=\"translation-block\"><b><strong><span style=\"color: #e6293f\">Gaining understanding:<\/span><\/strong><\/b> This step is about gaining a deep understanding of the users' needs and perspectives. To this end, interviews, observations and other methods are used to get to know the users and their needs better.<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"translation-block\"><b><strong><span style=\"color: #e6293f\">Task or problem definition:<\/span><\/strong><\/b> In this step, the findings from gaining an understanding are used to precisely define the problem and identify the challenges that need to be solved.<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"translation-block\"><b><strong><span style=\"color: #e6293f\">Joint brainstorming:<\/span><\/strong><\/b> In this step, ideas for solving the problem are generated. Creativity techniques such as brainstorming, crowdsourcing or mind mapping are often used here to generate a variety of ideas.<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"translation-block\"><b><strong><span style=\"color: #e6293f\">Creating prototypes:<\/span><\/strong><\/b> In this step, selected ideas are turned into concrete prototypes to test the functionality and user-friendliness of the solution. These are usually not functional prototypes, but haptic and\/or digital elements for early user feedback.<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"translation-block\"><b><strong><span style=\"color: #e6293f\">Testing the prototypes:<\/span><\/strong><\/b> In this step, the prototypes are tested in order to receive feedback from users and improve the solution. The feedback is used to optimize the solution and start the process all over again until a successful solution is found.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9094290 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9094290\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">Design thinking is a flexible approach that can be applied to a variety of problems and challenges in <strong> innovation management<\/strong> . By focusing on the needs and perspectives of users, design thinking can help to develop innovative solutions that are actually tailored to the needs of users.\u00e5<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: var(--artdeco-reset-typography-font-weight-normal);\" class=\"translation-block\">As the importance of services in business models increases, the professional design of services for different industries is becoming increasingly important.
